Pop Culture Connections

I found this on youtube and thought it was kind of interesting. What do you guys think about the fact that people are STILL using these stereotypes against women in books and movies in the 21st century? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQyPNo3BSbo

  1. I thought that was an interesting video, especially how they put the movie titanic in there. One part I liked was when some lady yelled "who made these rules?" I thought that was really thought provoking, because, really, how did our world come to be like this? We talked about how men were built for doing manly jobs like hunting while women were supposed to take care of children, but it's discouraging to know the main reason we have gender discrimination is because we were made to be family-makers and take-care-of-ers. But I guess with nature, you need to be able to do certain things to survive. Also, the first part really made an impact with me (where everything was a little too perfect/happy and ended with a lady shooting herself). It kind of said: how much different is slavery than being a person who only lives to serve others? or, how much different is being dead from not having control of their lives? I mean, in Edna's time, women could go participate in book clubs, or pursue certain interests, but eventually they (and women today) always seemed to hit a glass ceiling (anyone ever heard of that?) Sometimes, a woman's husband is a glass ceiling, an invisible covering preventing them from getting away from house chores and into the workforce. Sometimes it's their boss at work, preventing them from getting better wages. And then there's the glass ceiling not even the strongest women in our country seem to be able to reach - presidency. I think we're much closer to gender equality than a lot of countries, but I feel like all the remaining gender problems could be solved easily once that highest spot gets taken by a woman. But now I'm a little off topic - what did you all think of the video?

  2. That was really thoughtful, Clara! I definitely agree with you about the first one. It also reminds me of how messed up life can get sometimes, but we put on a smile because it's what is expected of us. That woman was obviously not doing so great, but you would NEVER have been able to tell until she pulled the trigger. Does that say something about what society tells women and people in general about how we're supposed to act in these situations? I wonder if that woman felt as stuck as Edna does in her relationship. I would have never thought to have done something like this for The Awakening. I'm really glad someone did, though. It raised some really thought-provoking questions in my mind.
