Edna

I was thinking about the awakening, and I was wondering what triggered Edna to not be a "mother-woman". I was thinking that maybe her mother was not very mother-womanly, so it could be genetic. Or, Edna could have been forced into this marriage, and want out, but feels like she has to stay because of her kids, therefore being just a mother. What do you guys think??????

  1. That's a good point, Claire. When she talks about her past history, she never mentions anything about her mother.....maybe she died. If she did, Edna grew up without any motherly support. I guess if she never had a mother, maybe she doesn't really know how to be one. It also seems to be hard for her to bond with people (except Robert). Also, do you guys think it's irresponsible for her to not be a caring mother to her children?

  2. I think it is slightly irresponsible, considering she is physically capable. But she is doing the right thing, and listening to the little voice in her mind saying "don't do things you don't want to do. just go be with the heart robber". I think that maybe edna doesn't feel like she belongs in her spot, and the book is going to be her finding a new spot

  3. there are a multitude of different things it could be, genetic as you suggested, ignorance, or a mental disorder or the like

  4. I think it's more likely a past-experience type thing. I wouldn't call this ignorance, it seems like she's just been forced into something she doesn't want. People always ask us "do you want to have a kid when you're older?" but at that time I think there wasn't really an option. It's not like we, as females have changed, the expectations of us have. No one would consider it weird if a girl said that they didn't want to have kids, but it was just unthinkable back then. I think it's irresponsible but at the same time I agree with Claire. I think Edna just needs to find a way to be happy :).
