This quote says a lot about Robert. I am wondering if they are having an affair already? Is there a reason that he is avoiding Mrs P then being devoted to her? It shows that he is very devoted to Mrs P, though obviously doesn't feel like he should/has to be.
Maybe Robert is holding away for a day because when you're away from somebody you like, they become more important to you because you miss them. Also, maybe he doesn't want Mr. Pontellier to realize he's stealing his wife, so he's taking it slowly.
